Sara Jane (Mitchell) Gray - April 1889


Apr 1 Monday Fine. I washed. Mrs Allen called. Men yarding wood. Some snow up hill. Iss at Town for Annie. Twin lambs came morning.

Apr 2 Tuesday Snowing, wind blowing very hard. Men yarded wood forenoon. Jim writing afternoon. William threshing peas. Iss, Ralph here all afternoon. Jim writing Jardine.

Apr 3 Wednesday Fine. Jim at Town. Got colt. Will hauling rails up hill. Took wood to school. I making hard soap. Amos at Town yesterday. Iss here. Sugar, Molasses, Fine Salt

Apr 4 Thursday Fine. Yarding wood put by gait. Amos at Tom's for seed wheat.

Apr 5 Friday Fine. Jim down at Spring Hill. I called at Mrs Allen's and John Campbell's. Rob here evening. Iss, R here. Calf came.

Apr 6 Saturday Fine. Jim W hauled load of wood from hill, also Island. Ice good yet. Iss, R here. I sick. Heffer calved. Mr Plass went home morning.

Apr 7 Sunday White frost last night. Very pleasant and warm today. I sick in bed nearly all day. No-one here for a wonder.

Apr 8 Monday Beautiful weather. Jim on Island with sled for blocks. William hauling rails for fence. I washed. My back very sore.

Apr 9 Tuesday Very fine and warm. Jim, William cutting wood at Mr Allen's line. Mary has cold. I ironed. Jean at school.

Apr 10 Wednesday Very fine. Jim at Town. Iss, R here. Mr Plass came home with Jim. I making hard soap.

Apr 11 Thursday Very fine. Jim, children and I up at Tom's. I finished soap. Had good luck.

Apr 12 Friday William, Plass hauling manure from Spring Hill. Fine day. Mrs Allen called morning.

Apr 13 Saturday Cloudy. Mrs Murray, Allice came to stay till tomorrow. Iss, R here. Jim out at camp for stove. Finished hauling wood. I got butter from Mrs Allen.

Apr 14 Sunday Raining. Jean, I walked to church. Confirmations today. Mrs D Allen, Mr & Mrs B Allen, etc. Mrs M and Allice went home. Bessie, Minnie went to Charley's. Iss went to Town.

Apr 15 Monday. Fine and warm. Jim, William yarding rails out to road. Jim C horse died.

Apr 16 Tuesday Fine, warm. Snow nearly all gone. Jim, William sawing wood. Took turkey to Mr Allen's. I over there afternoon. Iss came home from Town.

Apr 17 Wednesday Fine. Ice running out at Town. R Elliott here. Men sawing wood. Rob Gray here for tea. Iss, R here. Jim put potatoes on shelf to sprout.

Apr 18 Thursday Raining. Jim at Town with one horse. Ice running out. Iss and I took a walk to river. Men sawing wood.

Apr 19 Friday Fine, warm. Jim at Town for seed oats. William came up with him. Jim C ploughing. Good Friday.

Apr 20 Saturday Children at Isses. Jim mending bed stead. Mr Plass at Town with hay for his cow. Snow nearly all gone and very fine, warm.

Apr 21 Sunday Very fine and warm. Jim up hill. Ice all gone. Water very high. Iss, children and I went for a walk. No-one at church.

Apr 22 Monday Heavy wind. Men splitting blocks. Saddie came morning. I washed. Saddie went home at night.

Apr 23 Tuesday Fine. Mr Plass took his cow home. William commenced to plough today for first.

Apr 24 Wednesday Jim at Town. Willie went home. Mame sent up Jean's white dress. I cleaning men's rooms. William building fence up hill.

Apr 25 Thursday Fine. I cleaned stove pipe room. W ploughing. Burnt the bushes at road. Sandy Greaves buried. Wind blowing very hard. Iss here.

Apr 26 Friday Fine. W ploughing. Jim up road collecting school taxes. Rob at school with Jean to candy party. I washed bedding. Iss here.

Apr 27 Saturday Heavy rain. Jim took hay to Elliott. William in Town afternoon, took butter. Rob sick. Mary bad cough tonight.

Apr 28 Sunday Wet, cloudy all day. Iss, Jim here evening. Jim Feance up hill. My feet very lame.

Apr 29 Monday Heavy rain. Shearing sheep. William ploughing. Steers went away. Iss, R here. I never seen grass as green this time of year. Rob very sick all night.

Apr 30 Tuesday Still raining. Jim, William cleaning peas. Rob in bed. Bad cough today. Plass came back.

Mar 1 Friday - Blank

Mar 2 Saturday - Ace took Nin, children up home evening.

Mar 3 Sunday - David Shanks here for dinner. Plaster came off Pa's lip after Ace and Mame left home. They called at door. Rob Gray here for tea. Fine day.

Mar 4 Monday - John Sharp, Amos came for hay. Each got a load. Very fine day.

Mar 5 Tuesday - Men hauling hay home.

Mar 6 Wednesday - Jim sick with bad cold. In his bed all day.

Mar 7 Thursday - Jim sick. I twisting yarn.

Mar 8 Friday - Jim better. Raining.

Mar 9 Saturday - Jim out for first, sawing wood. Plass and William hauling hay. Thomas Davidson came afternoon. Jean up at John Campbell's changing books.

Mar 10 Sunday - Fine day. Thomas and I went over to Uncle James Campbell's. Chris Cooper then Charles Murray here for tea spent evening.

Mar 11 Monday - Jim, Tom went to town with Flewelling's horse. Frank Burden here helping William haul hay. Ida, Mrs C called morning. Fine day.

Mar 12 Tuesday - Fine day. Mrs Campbell, Ida, Miss Brown, Annie C here for tea. Ida fitted my jacket. Tom went home with them. Frank B here. Jim down to see John Chamber's sick horse.

Mar 13 Wednesday - William, Frank hauling hay. Jim took Tom up to Tom Gray's. I finished twisting yarn and washed it. Very fine day and warm. Snow nearly all gone. Travelling on ice.

Mar 14 Thursday - Wind blowing very hard. Jim and man hauling wood to Springhill. Took Mr Pry up to Charles Murray's. Jim Campbell at Grand Lake. I piecing quilt. Jim came home from lake tonight.

Mar 15 Friday - Fine and warm. James, children and I in Town all day. I sold 6 3/4 yarn. Mame poorly. Anna bad cold. Finished hauling hay off Island. Two lambs came today.

Mar 16 Saturday - Very fine. Thomas Davidson went home. Iss R here. Rob and I up to see Mr McIntosh evening. Took Poster over to girls. Hauling cord wood to Spring Hill.

Mar 17 Sunday - Raining so Miss B and I cannot go to Kirk. Ground half bare.

Mar 18 Monday - Washed. Hauling cord wood fore noon. Manure up hill afternoon. Iss R evening.

Mar 19 Tuesday - Amos here with load of hay. Some snow came last night. Mr Plass came evening. William hauling manure up hill.

Mar 20 Wednesday - Hauling up hill. Fine day. No one here all day except Ralph.

Mar 21 Thursday - Hauling up hill. I went calling at Mrs Straton's, Mr Currie's and had tea at Olive's. Miss Murray with me.

Mar 22 Friday - Fine day. Went to school afternoon. Rob went in morning. Jim at Town with potatoes. He went on ice. Got barrel of flour.

Mar 23 Saturday - Fine and warm. Hauling up hill yet. Jim at mill buckwheat. He on Island for bread box.

Mar 24 Sunday - Pleasant. Jean and I at Church. Text St Luke 11 Chapter 14th verse - and he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. Plass cow calved. Iss R here.

Mar 25 Monday - Fine and warm. Hauling manure up hill. Jim hauling off Island. Invited to Mr Allen's for tea. Can't go.

Mar 26 Tuesday - Very hard frost. Hauling up hill. I made Robbie pants.

Mar 27 Wednesday - Cloudy. I went to see Mr Elliott. Called at Mr Allen's. Iss R here. Gave me a collar. Making Robbie's shirts. Hauling up hill.

Mar 28 Thursday - Fine day. Iss and I up to Charley Murray's for tea. Called at Post Office. Letter from Tom Davidson. Jim fixing sled. William hauling up hill. I made Saddie's dress.

Mar 29 Friday - Fine. Hauling up hill. Finished sled.

Mar 30 Saturday - Snowing. Jim yarding wood with one horse. 100 loads of manure up hill tonight. Iss R here. Saddie went home. Nin went to Town in train.

Mar 31 Sunday - Cold wind. I went to church alone. Jim up hill. Rob walked down on ice. He, Mr Allen here for tea.

Feb 1 Friday - Cold, stormy. Jim hauling cord wood.

Feb 2 Saturday - Clear, cold. Jim hauling wood.

Feb 3 Sunday - Rob here for tea. Fine day.

Feb 4 Monday - I washed. Snowing and cold.

Feb 5 Tuesday - Killed two beeves. Mr Sears called. Iss, Ralph here.

Feb 6 Wednesday - Raining all day. Cut up beef. Jim at Spring Hill with two quarters. Hauled one load of hay.

Feb 7 Thursday - Jim at town with beef. Pa came. Amos, Iss here. I picked sheep skin.

Feb 8 Friday - Pa went to Town with Jim and Iss. Opened a barrel of flour.

Feb 9 Saturday - Pa and Mame went up home with Will Graham. Cancer on Pa's lip.

Feb 10 Sunday - Pa, Mame, Amos went up to Mrs Pelky's to get plaster on his lip. She put it on at two o'clock afternoon then they drove home about twenty miles. Jim and Iss went up. Iss M going to stay with him.

Feb 13 Wednesday - William and I went up to Tom's and he staid in Rob's place. He, Rob took me home to see Pa. He easier. Aunt Ann there.

Feb 16 Saturday - John Murray, Allice here. Allice going to stay. Coldest night have had this winter. Anna, Willie here. Ace up home. Children have colds.

Feb 17 Sunday - Allice went to Kirk with Jim and Annie Campbell. Anna, Willie having jolly time. Fine day.

Feb 18 Monday - Ace came for children. Took them home. Plaster came off Pa's face today. Amos went for Mrs Pelky. I at Town with Maggie Murray afternoon. Allice keeping house.

Feb 19 Tuesday - Mrs P put a new plaster on Pa's face at nine o'clock morning.

Feb 20 Wednesday - Amos took Mrs P home. Came back to Uncle John Anderson's. Allice here still. She over at Mrs Straton's today.

Feb 21 Thursday - Jim and I went up to see Pa. Allice kept house. Mary sick. Pa easier. Uncle John, Mr Belma called to see him. Charley and Maggie at Uncle Jameses. Allice went over and went home with them.

Feb 22 Friday - Blank

Feb 23 Saturday - John Murray called for Allice's things. Coldest night yet. Saddie Elliott came here today.

Feb 24 Sunday - No-one here today. Very cold indeed.

Jan 4 Friday - Hauling grain.

Jan 5 Saturday - Jim and I at Fredericton. Got his fur cap. Iss kept children. Warm, pleasant.

Jan 6 Sunday - Rob and Annie went to Kirk. Jim, Jean up to Tom's.

Jan 7 Monday - Raining hard. Jean at school. Jim hauling wood to school house.

Jan 8 Tuesday - Warm, raining. Hauled last of grain off Island.

Jan 9 Wednesday - Cloudy. Jean at school. Plass here. Iss here.

Jan 10 Thursday - Hauling hay. Plass came evening. Jim and I at Mr Montgomery spending evening.

Jan 11 Friday - Jim went for threshing machine. Took pig away.

Jan 12 Saturday - Mr Kilburn went home with a sick horse.

Jan 13 Sunday - Jim, children and I called at Mr Delancy Allen's. Fine, cold, very little snow. Travelling on ice.

Jan 14 Monday - Jim hauling wood. Plass brought his cow. Fine day.

Jan 15 Tuesday - Jim went to Town on ice. Took butter.

Jan 16 Wednesday - Jim took two cords of wood to Fredericton on ice. Fine day.

Jan 17 Thursday - Threshing machine at work. Mr Kilburn's horse died. Raining. Amos here for dinner.

Jan 18 Friday - Finished threshing. Charles Currie helping Jim.

Jan 19 Saturday - Very cold and windy. Mr Allen's children here for tea. Iss here. Plass went home.

Jan 20 Sunday - Very windy. Amos took Nin to Fredericton. Came back here and staid all night.

Jan 21 Monday - Snowing very hard. Amos went home. Ace here. He brought Miss Brown up in time for school. I washed. Hauling wood off hill.

Jan 22 Tuesday - Robert Michael's birthday. Four years old today.

Jan 23 Wednesday - I making William's frock. Clear, cold.

Jan 24 Thursday - Hauling wood off Island that Mr Dunphy cut.

Jan 25 Friday - Hauling hay.

Jan 26 Saturday - Jim at Town. Butter. Miss Brown here for dinner. Making Jean's dress. Jim, children and I went up to Pa's afternoon. Very pleasant.

Jan 27 Sunday - Very cold and windy. We staid home all day. William kept house all alone.

Jan 28 Monday -  Came home. Got our dinner at Captain Shanks. Very warm, pleasant. Roads very much drifted. Plass came evening.

Jan 29 Tuesday - Man commenced to cut cord wood on hill. Cold.

Jan 30 Wednesday - Hauling cord wood. Iss here. Jean at home from school.

Jan 31 Thursday - Rob called afternoon. Sarah, Annie and Iss here evening.
