January 1938 - Huldah

Huldah, at the age of 16,  married (eloped with) Millen Anderson on January 3, 1938 and her diary starts two days later.

Jan 5, Wednesday Cleaned up Shivaree mess. Did some cooking. Tressa and Verna came up. To bed early. (Tressa was Millen's sister and Verna was Tressa's daughter)

Jan 6, Thursday Millen and I collected for Fred. Down home to dinner. Packed my clothes. Back to Tressa's to supper. Tressa and John up.

Jan 7, Friday Rained and misty all day. Millen and Mr Anderson went to look at bob sleds. Mrs A and I did work. Read a book at night.

Jan 8, Saturday Millen and Aubrey killed pigs. Unpacked my clothes. Millen and I went down to Ruth's at night. Charlie M not feeling well.  (Aubrey was Millen's brother. Ruth was Millen's sister and Charlie Mills was her husband.)

Jan 9, Sunday Didn't get up in time for church. Read all afternoon. Mr A down to Tressa's.  I got supper. Down to Ruth's and up home at night.

Jan 10 Monday Got up early. Millen helped Fred in afternoon. Jack Ward and George Kelly helped Fred put his sills up. John and Tressa up. (John Burrell was Tressa's husband.)

Jan 11 Tuesday Mr A and Millen went to town. Took Clifford Barr down with them. Jeanie back at P.N.S. Fred in town too. Letter from Betty. Chas Mills up to supper. (Jeanie was Huldah's sister who attended the Provincial Normal School to become a teacher.)

Jan 12 Wednesday Aubrey went to town. Ruth came up and she and Aubrey stayed to supper. Millen and I took her home. Letter from Helen.

Jan 13 Thursday Renie went over to Yankey's. Aubrey here. Billy Man here. I was down to Edie's. Della was there. Mrs A at Burrell's at night. (Yankey was Aubrey's wife's nickname. Her real name was Carrie.)

Jan 14 Friday Snowed a little. Millen in the woods all day. Mr Ward, Kelly, etc, and Mr A all working at Fred's house. I was over to Aubrey's.

Jan 15 Saturday  Mama A went to town. Saw Daddy and Jeanie. Millen in the woods. I made cookies and got dinner. Tressa and John up.

Jan 16 Sunday Della and Edith up in morning. Read "The Last Trail" all afternoon. Mrs A home for supper. Millen and I down to John's after.  Edna and Della there.

Jan 17 Monday Rene went to Upper Kingsclear. Millen and Mr A worked at Fred's house. Card from Helen and Thurman. Mrs A washed.

Jan 18 Tuesday Charlie M up but did not stay. Very cold. Mr Ward and Mr Kelly went home at noon. Millen in the woods all afternoon.

Jan 19 Wednesday Not quite so cold. Guy down skating. Millen, Guy and Aubrey worked at hauling pulp to freight car. George B up at night. (Guy was Millen's brother.)

Jan 20, Thursday Charlie M up. Not near so cold. Millen, etc, hauled pulp. Millen in town in afternoon. Mrs A down to Tressa's. Arthur Ellingsworth and Elwood K to dinner.

Jan 21, Friday Rene came back. Millen took me down home and I helped Mamma. Jeanie came home. Shower at night. Got many lovely gifts. Big crowd here.

Jan 22, Saturday Jeanie up to supper. Finished shingling Fred's house. I made a cake, etc. Aubrey here. Guy, Edna B, Millen and I to town. Saw Gene Autrey in Boots and Saddles, etc.

Jan 23, Sunday Quite warm for a change. Wrote Helen's letter. Millen, Mrs Anderson and I went to church at night.

Jan 24, Monday Rene gone up the road. We sent Helen's and Flora's letters. Ruth up and Millen and I took Guy and her down. Millen and I got our presents. (Flora was Millen's sister.)

Jan 25, Tuesday Rained today. Men worked at Fred's house. Gus Wilson here awhile. Millen drove Mr Ward and Mr Kelly home.

Jan 26, Wednesday Ice and snow nearly all gone. Men worked at Fred's house. Charlie Mills up. John and George B came up at night.

Jan 27, Thursday Lovely day but kind of cold. Ruth came up to see my presents. Went back about 3pm. John and Tressa up at night. Millen and I read books.

Jan 28, Friday A beautiful sunny day. Millen and Guy went to MacAdam and Lynnfield. Mrs A churned. Billy Francis up and played cards with George B, etc.
